Ann Arbor

I grew up in Ann Arbor! While it’s definitely overhyped as a “foodie” city, there are still many good spots, mostly not near downtown/UM. Here’s a list of my recommendations in the Ann Arbor and Ypsi area; ❤️ means favorites

Bakeries

  • CRUST ($$): Fenton-based bakery whose products are sold at Argus Farm Stand and many coffee shops in the Ann Arbor area. Famous cinnamon rolls.
  • Flightless Bakery & Patisserie ($$): kouign amann in fun flavors by a self-taught baker. Available at the farmers market.
  • White Lotus Farms ($$): at the farmer’s market, Argus Farm Stand, and their own farm cart on certain weekdays (schedule online). Probably the best croissants in the area.
  • Bird Dog Baking ($$): naturally leavened bread made with local ingredients, from alums of Josey Baker Bread/The Mill in San Francisco. Available by local delivery and at Argus Farm Stand and Produce Station. By far the best bread I’ve had in Michigan. Their oat cookies and rye tea cakes are great too ❤️

Restaurants

  • Broadway Cafe & Hoagie ($$): family-run Korean restaurant. I really like their soondubu.
  • Detroit Street Filling Station ($$): vegan cafe. I like their power up bowl.
  • La Torre Taqueria ($): good tacos in Ypsi
  • Lan City ($$): handpulled noodles in Ypsi. Try the hot pepper oil noodles
  • Loomi Cafe ($$): creative casual eatery in Kerrytown. Global influences and very strong flavors. Edit: Closed in December 2021 😦
  • Spencer ($$$): seasonally- and locally-driven small plates and wine bar
  • YP Sichuan ($$): Sichuan food in Ypsi from the owners of Ypbor Yan
